The royal family is anachronistic.
19th Oct 2025
An anachronism is something out of place in time.
Someone using a mobile phone in a film, set in the time of Robin Hood would be an anachronistic blunder.
Having a royal family particularly a hereditary royal family system in 2025 is anachronistic.
Rather than sweep away the royal family we could simply sweep aside the hereditary aspect.
We could elect a king / queen. However, that could end up providing a podium for a political figure. I certainly would not want a celebrity of sorts being given the spot either.
We could have a lottery instead.
Any British citizen could put their name in the hat. The winner would reign for 10 years. They would shadow the present king / queen for three years prior, to learn the job so to speak.
The monarch has a role to play in British life. They have a multitude of duties and responsibilities. It is a crucual part of the system. We can remove the entitlement feature yet still keep the useful aspects.
