I ask you, how on earth is this definition useful? Is it useful? Not one bit. People reel off this definition with a smug self-congratulatory look on their face. As if they are clever and all-knowing.

I am safe to assume the purpose of this so-called ‘definition of a woman’ is to differentiate a woman from a man. Afterall, it is used in the context of who is allowed in discriminatory women’s only safe spaces.

It has what might be termed ‘redundancy’ within it. Both men and women are clearly human adults. So, women are female, men are male. That reduces the word count and gets to the point much better. Besides would a girl, say a seventeen-year-old girl be allowed in a toilet designated for women? I would assume so, thus the adult element in the definition makes even less sense.

How to define a woman. Or how do we decide if someone ought to be classed as a woman?

Many believe that the presence of a cervix is key. However, there is a lot more to women than having a cervix. A woman is not simply a walking cervix. We class someone as male or female when we hear them on the telephone. We can tell, often getting the approximate age correct too. We see woman-ness is lots of ways. To make a judgement we can look at salient parts. A person is a woman if on aggregate those salient parts outweigh the salient parts relating to men, males, boys.

Here are some potential parts/tests that we can use to make a good judgement.

Womb

Cervix

Breasts (protruding)

Centre of gravity test

Softer, thinner dermis

Vocal tone / voice pitch

Hormone levels with comparatively low testosterone level

Laryngeal prominence; less pronounced Adam’s apple

This is merely an indicative list. The full list would be substantially longer. What matters is whether someone is on aggregate female or male according to the assessment of many physical/biological parts. If a woman has a mastectomy or a hysterectomy she would still fall into the female camp. She would still be a woman on aggregate. Focusing on one item gets you nowhere. Examining the broader picture is much more productive.

You may feel inside as though you are in the wrong body. Evolution gave you the body you have, and it is the right body. It may not be the best or more desired body, but it is your body. The correct body. The biological, physical makeup determines your sex category. To change oneself from being on aggregate female to being on aggregate male invariably involves so many alterations that you would perish or be very dis-functional.
