The chair.

Arguments. Agreement. Defining things.

Listen carefully for you will learn something truly helpful.

To understand this helpful thing, I want you to answer some simple questions.

Q1. Is this a chair?

If we struggle to define a chair, you can imagine the struggle people have trying to define good, bad, ugly, fair and reasonable. Can you see how difficult it is to define things. A chair need not have four legs. It could have one leg or eighty-eight. It can be big, small and made from rock or wood. A table can become a bed at night. Someone puts a blanket down on the table and uses it as a bed.

What about gender? What is a man, what is a woman?

What you should have noticed is that I said 99.8%, then 97%, then 86%, then 5% agree that the picture of the chair showed a chair. This should help you in life. As something becomes more chair like, more accept it as being a chair. That applies to all things. Maybe 98% of the population will think a person is a man. Maybe in other cases 91% will. Maybe there is more contentiousness in some cases and 60% declare a person to be a man / woman.

If 98% of people think something is something, that is the conclusion. The majority believe. Not all, but the majority. The 2% will have their reasons. You may feel the 2% are being awkward. Maybe, maybe not. Most people will believe in a thing or two that the majority do not.

Something is not somthing full stop. Something is believed to be something by a certain proportion of people.

This gives rise to the oft quoted saying, “Life is not black and white”.
