Our Madley moments

– Madley maladies (maladies: mental ailments).

The crowd are jeering; the noise is getting very loud.

Mr Madley asks, “You want me to do my impression?”

The crowd erupts further.

Again, he asks, “You want me to do my impression”, in a teasing way, to get the crowd to persuade him.

More hollering from the crowd.

Then he realises something.

It is not about him.

His wife has a wardrobe malfunction. Part of her dress has fallen away revealing her bra. Hence, the noise from the crowd.

I suspect we have all had Madley malady moments. Someone has told us that they have some news or wants to tell us something, and we think it will be something to do with us. It turns out to be quite the opposite. It is not about us at all.

The conversation may start, “I was going to ask you something”, your mind pivots to your latest project and you believe that they want to know something about what you are doing. Alas, the next sentence dampens that belief.

We live in our own bubble, caring about ourselves the most, most of the time. That is the way it needs to be. That is how it is most of the time. Wanting to feel relevant, wanting to be respected – at little at least.
